It’s hard to know when someone is cheating on you, because people are often good liars. You don’t want to feel like you’re being played for a fool, but at the same time you don’t want to make wild accusations against your partner if there’s a chance they’re being honest.
There are some common excuses that people will use when they’re cheating, as a way of explaining their whereabouts. Let’s look at 7 of the most-used cheating excuses, so that you can look out for them if you have suspicions.
But before we get into them, let’s be clear – any of these could be genuine, too. Just because your partner uses one of these lines on you, that doesn’t mean they’re a cheater. You just need to know that these are common, and so it’s something that might raise a red flag worth investigating more.
- “I had to work late.”
The classic excuse, but also one that could definitely be real. Your partner might not be cheating, they might just have urgent work to deal with, or they might feel like they need to prioritise their work right now.
Try taking an active interest in their work, asking more questions (without interrogating your partner). This will help you work out whether they’re telling the truth or not.
- “I was out with friends.”
This is one of the more common excuses used by partners who stop replying to texts. And they’re allowed to spend time with friends. Don’t get too possessive. But at the same time, be aware that this might be a cover story.
- “I got stuck in traffic.”
Ask how likely this is – if they’ve been gone for a couple of hours, but their commute is only usually 30 minutes, that’s some serious traffic issues. A quick search on social media could verify whether there was a traffic jam or not.
- “I needed some alone time to clear my head.”
You need to be super-careful with this one because it might be that they are going through something. Mistaken accusations of cheating will hardly help. Give them space and time, and then talk.
- “I went to the gym.”
This is another excuse that could be perfectly valid, but ask whether it seems right for your partner. Are they someone who would likely spend a large amount of time at a gym? Have they also adjusted their diet to match?
- “I lost track of time while running errands.”
Losing track of time can happen to anyone, so don’t assume this is a cheating partner, but if it becomes a recurring theme then ask why it keeps happening.
- “I fell asleep early.”
Another common one for partners who stop replying to texts suddenly. They might’ve fallen asleep but there’s also a chance they were meeting someone and just wanted to stop replying.
With all of these excuses, it’s important to look at the wider context of your relationship – how are things going, are there other concerns, how often do these excuses crop up?
